Home insurance warning for school holidays

There is a significant increase in home insurance claims during the school holidays, warns Swinton .

According to the insurer, there was a “significant” increase in the number of claims it received during July and August last year. As a result of the recession, many families are choosing to stay at home instead of taking a more expensive holiday abroad and Swinton says the problem could be significantly worse this year. The main problems involve smashed windows and broken electrical equipment, as well as damaged carpets and couches.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton, said: “The summer holidays is a long period of time to keep children entertained. School holidays dramatically increase the risk of an accident in the home and we would urge parents to check their home insurance policy to ensure they are covered.”

Mr Chelton added that while accidental damage generally covers many household items, it is worth increasing it to cover other accidents such as carpet spillages.
