Combined home contents and buildings insurance not always the best option

Many homeowners buy home insurance as a combined buildings and contents insurance policy but it appears that for 40 per cent of households this may not be the best option.

The benefits of buying combined home contents and buildings insurance are promoted by a lot of home insurance providers, usually through competitive promotional discounts and offers.

By using a broker, such as AA Insurance or a comparison website, home insurance quotes can be compared from a number of providers. By doing this, consumers can see whether buying home insurance with contents and buildings combined, or buying them individually, is the best option for them.

According to research from AA Insurance, over 40 per cent of their sample of home insurance quotes would save money if their home insurance and contents policies were brought from different insurers . Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: “A third of home-owners arrange their home insurance with the bank or building society from whom they bought their mortgage, and may have renewed for years without exploring better options.”
