Home insurer urges students to be security conscious

Students are being advised by Saga home insurance to be security conscious when the new university year starts in the autumn and not to become easy targets for burglars .

A free student survival guide which has been put together by the police force, the National Union of Students and the Home Office, is available from the insurance provider.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, is encouraging people going to university take steps to ensure their safety and security.

He said: “For many students, making new friends and socialising will be higher on their agenda than being security conscious. This could make them easy targets for criminals .”

Saga home insurance is recommending that parents carry out a security check when they arrive at their children’s university residence as one in three students will be a victim of crime every year, according to research carried out by the firm.
