Travel insurance necessary for older people

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has acknowledged that travel insurance is more costly for older people, especially those with pre-existing medical conditions, but said that it would be “very foolish” not to take it out.

Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for the organisation, remarked that as a result of longer life spans and increased wealth, older people are more frequently opting for adventurous holidays . “If you have a pre-existing medical condition and you decide not to take out insurance because of the fact that it’s more expensive, then it’s very foolish because you’re more likely to need it than other people,” he said.

A recent study by the Foreign Office found that 20 per cent of the over 55s took risks while on holiday that they would not ordinarily take at home and 65 per cent of this age group did not take out travel insurance on their last trip abroad .
