Extra insurance cover essential for overseas weddings

Holiday and wedding insurance are very different things and an industry expert is warning couples who are planning on getting married abroad to ensure that they are adequately covered.

According to Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba), the unreliable British weather and the rising costs of holding a ceremony in the UK are encouraging an increasing number of couples to think about tying the knot overseas . He added that the growing number of low-cost airlines has also helped to popularise overseas ceremonies.

However, Mr Staddon warned couples to arrange insurance cover before flying off for the big day and explained that a holiday that involved a wedding was “different” from the usual holiday and that it required different insurance . He said: ” Holiday insurance is that – holiday . A wedding is different and, as such, brings with it other problems, the dress, the rings, the wedding refinery.”

He added that many insurance policies would put a limit on the value of the gifts that would be covered and therefore it would be better for guests to give gifts when the couple returned home.
