AA insurance have warned innocent UK car insurance policyholders that they could be affected by fresh moves to clamp down on drivers who don’t pay for an insurance policy .
The insurance company indicate that genuine motorists who have a car insurance policy could face trouble from the police if they have not renewed before their existing contract runs out.
New regulations, which computerise car insurance policyholders on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) require insurance companies to register details within seven-days of renewal.
The insurer relations director at AA Insurance, John Close, reportedly commented: “Police use automatic number plate recognition technology which instantly cross-checks registration numbers against the MID. If a checked vehicle is not on the database the equipment alerts police who can then stop it. If the driver can’t prove that he or she is covered, the car could be confiscated.”
Furthermore, the AA revealed that one in 20 motorists do not pay for car insurance .
