Doctors have been shown to be some of the most accident-prone drivers in the country. Alongside accountants, they are paying top whack for their motor insurance policies . Cheaper professions, according to the study by moneysupermarket, included actors, antique dealers and wine merchants .

The safest profession on the road was found to be astrologers, who are seven times less likely than doctors to have a crash. Doctors, for their risk, pay an average of 9 per cent more for their premiums. Statistics say that some 13 per cent of doctors have had an accident in the last five years.

Speaking for MoneySupermarket.com, Richard Mason was reported as saying: “You could be the best driver in the world, but if you work in a profession that has a record for causing accidents, the bad news is that you will have to pay more for your insurance, so it is crucial to shop around for the best deals. But it is equally important to make sure that you give your profession accurately when applying for motor insurance, as job titles that sound similar can often be underwritten at very different rates.”
