Approximately a fifth of holidaymakers are unaware of what information is necessary to make a travel insurance claim overseas.
According to research from financial services provider Halifax Travel Insurance, 20 per cent of Britons do not realise that if they become a theft victim they must obtain a police report from the local authorities.
If they fail to do this, they could potentially find themselves unable to make a claim on their travel insurance policies in certain countries across the world.
Paul Birkenhead, underwriting manager at Halifax Travel Insurance, has commented on the findings of the insurance study.
“Halifax Travel Insurance would advise all holidaymakers to research their destination thoroughly before travelling,” he said.
“It is important when holidaymakers take out insurance that they read the terms and conditions carefully.”
Depending upon the type of travel insurance policy arranged, holidaymakers may be entitled to make an insurance claim for a wide variety of holiday mishaps.
For example, if their luggage goes missing at the airport or their flights are seriously delayed then they may be eligible to make a travel insurance claim.
