Millions wouldn’t change to go green, car insurance provider finds

Some 13.2 million UK motorists would not be willing to use their car less to make a positive impact on the environment, a car insurance provider has found.

Just over 40 per cent of drivers would not be prepared to stop using their vehicle for part of one day per week in order to reduce their carbon footprint, a study by online car insurance provider swiftcover.com discovered.

The car insurance expert claimed that this shows that government plans to financially reward greener drivers are misguided.

Andrew Blowers, chief executive of swiftcover.com, commented: “The research overwhelming proves Britain’s drivers, although open to buying an environmentally-friendly car, are simply unable to give-up the car for the essential journeys in their daily lives.

“We should face up to the fact that financial levies to discourage car use are not the answer to this country’s serious environmental issue.”

Mr Blowers suggested that the government would be better served by working with manufacturers and fuel suppliers to improve the availability and affordability of eco-friendly cars.

Several companies, including the Co-operative Insurance Society and Climatesure, have created green car insurance policies designed to appeal to eco-friendly drivers.
