Home insurance warning over flood threat

Britons have been warned that they must have adequate home insurance, as many UK homes could face the risk of flooding.

Some two million homes are potentially at risk of flooding, with severe consequences for those not adequately covered by their home insurance policy, claimed Prudential.

The home insurance provider commented in the wake of Met Office warnings over possible floods in western areas of the UK.

Phil Southgate, Media Relations Manager at Prudential Home Insurance, commented: “The recent threat from Hurricane Gordon and the fact that we are approaching the flood season should be enough to encourage homeowners, especially those in areas of heightened flood risk, to check they have flood protection in place and that their insurance is adequate enough.

He added that many people are “caught out” by poor preparation, while the debates over climate change and increasingly erratic weather patterns should highlight the dangers.

Last week, the Met Office stated that high tides, coupled with gales of up to 60mph could cause flooding, while Direct Line urged Britons to keep home insurance documents in a watertight container.
