Consumers need to be protected when buying travel insurance, according to Emma Bandey of consumer watchdog Which?
Those looking for trip insurance should be aware that a number of travel agents have been selling policies which are more expensive and irrelevant to the customer, Ms Bandey told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up To Money show.
Consequently, Which? is urging the government to impose tighter regulations regarding the selling of travel insurance documents.
Ms Bandey told the radio programme: “Consumers should be protected, they should have the same peace of mind and we hope that the Treasury will ensure this loophole is closed.”
Earlier this week, Ed Balls, economic secretary, told the Treasury select committee that “only 50 per cent of policies” provide cover for emergency medical treatment, carer expenses and repatriation.
Alluding to consumer group pressure, from companies such as Which?, Mr Balls added that the government needs to decide if action needs to be taken over the mis-selling of travel insurance products.
“We … need to get to the bottom of whether travel insurance sold with a holiday is being mis-sold,” Mr Balls remarked.
