Holidaymakers urged to check minimum insurance cover

An insurance industry expert has added to calls for holidaymakers to ensure that when choosing a travel insurance policy they take one with a lender providing adequate cover.

Richard Mason from price comparison site insuresupermarket.com made his comments in response to a report by Defaqto warning that, if a travel insurance policy is priced considerably lower than the average for that type of cover, it is probably untrustworthy.

Mr Mason welcomed the report before emphasising the need for travellers to take out an insurance policy that really does provide enough cover on any situation they could possibly face while abroad.

He said: “Some of the deals do seem exceptionally good value but you must check they provide sufficient medical, cancellation, personal allowance and baggage cover.

“The cheaper policies can sometimes have either little or no baggage or cancellation cover or in some cases a reduced medical cover, an area that should never be compromised.”

insuresupermarket.com advises that Brits should not travel abroad without insurance covering them for up to at least £2 million in medical expenses and at least £1 million in personal liability expenses.

Problems can also occur with regards travel arrangements and so insuresupermarket.com also advises that holidaymakers take out travel insurance policies providing £3,000 in cancellation cover and £1,500 in baggage loss cover.
