Travel insurance company highlights need for cover

Snowboarding is a safer winter sport option than skiing, new research by a travel insurance company suggests.

AA Travel Insurance found that snowboarders are less likely than skiers to be involved in an accident on the slopes.

The medical insurance claims made by snowboarders are less serious and typically cheaper than those made by skiers, the travel insurance company suggests.

But despite the fact that snowboarders’ injuries are usually no more than a sprained ankle, they are still advised to take the necessary safety and insurance precautions before heading down the slope.

AA Travel Insurance warns that the cost of medical care at winter sport resorts has risen by nearly half over the last three years.

Alison Crossley, head of AA Travel Insurance, says that depending on which country the traveller is visiting, treatment for a sprained ankle can cost “anything between £100 to £1,000”.

Therefore travel insurance is “essential” in case the worst happens, she says.

“AA Travel Insurance, including winter sports cover, provides up to £10 million for medical expenses as well as cover for equipment hire, lost lift passes, ski school expenses, piste closure and up to £2 million personal liability insurance if you injure anyone else on the slopes and they claim against you,” Ms Crossley explains.
