Holidaymakers urged to shop around for travel insurance and money

Holidaymakers are being urged to not only shop around for the best travel insurance, but to also make sure they get a competitive deal when they purchase foreign currency.

Yesterday, American Express Travel Insurance warned those planning to go on a cruise ship holiday to “never set sail” without taking out adequate travel insurance.

Price comparison website MoneyExpert warns that a foreign holiday could prove costly.

“There are so many extra costs to look out for when going on holiday, from commission on converting holiday money to travel insurance, that having a foreign break can prove very expensive,” says its chief executive Sean Gardner.

The website supports the launch of first direct’s fee-free online travel money offer which has been extended to May 31st 2006.

With this service, holidaymakers receive a “competitive” exchange rate on foreign cash and travellers’ cheques, as well as home delivery on the next working day.

Richard Kimber, chief executive of first direct, says the majority of holidaymakers take time out to search for the best deal for their holiday, but that a recent survey shows that only 55 per cent look for a competitive deal on travel money.

“We’re already one of the most competitive providers but with a next day home delivery service and with this extended offer we reckon we’ve got value and convenience all sewn up,” Mr Kimber concludes.
