Garages pose home insurance risk, Saga says

Garages in the UK are a treasure trove for thieves, a home insurance company points out.

Research by Saga Home Insurance found that even though British householders store thousands of pounds worth of possessions in their garages, a fifth leave theirs unlocked.

Half of those polled by the insurance company estimate the value of contents stored in their garages at more than £500, while a third said they keep more than £1,000 worth of valuables in theirs.

Power tools, bikes, lawn mowers and sports equipment are among the possessions most likely to end up being stored in a garage, yet 21 per cent of householders admit their garages are not secured against the threat of theft.

“Anyone using their garage as extra storage space should consider the value of its contents – opportunistic thieves could find a wealth of goods just waiting for them,” says Saga’s chief executive Andrew Goodsell.

He adds that it is “well worth” for householders checking their home insurance policies to see if their insurance company imposes any limits on theft from outbuildings.
