The realities of life are that we all get old, we will fall in and out of love and some of us will gain more weight than we want to. Would it change anything if we were able to insure ourselves against such things?
Research from Abbey shows, that if it were possible to buy relationship insurance for choosing the wrong partner, nine million Britons would buy it. The survey also showed that women were more likely than men to buy it.
A breakdown down of the type of insurance people would consider buying, 28 per cent would buy insurance for getting old, one in five women would buy insurance if they gain excess weight.
However, only 15 per cent of those surveyed would buy insurance if the weather turns bad and six per cent of men would get cover against hair loss.
Many Britons would be willing to have cover for the above situations but worryingly many do not have cover for basic everyday matters. Abbeys research shows that there are millions of people who have no cover at all, out of which 22 per cent have no home contents insurance and three out of ten drivers have no car insurance.
As the research shows people are reluctant to take out insurance to protect their possessions and belongings but they are also taking risks when it comes to themselves and their families. Half do not have any life insurance and one in five has critical illness protection should they not be able to work.
Sue Wilkinson, Head of Health and Protection Insurance, Abbey said: “Our research provides a light-hearted insight into the national psyche and it’s not surprising that so many people said they worry about gaining weight or getting old. But on a more serious note, too many people are taking chances when it comes to the things we care most about in life such as the family, health, home and car. Arranging the right insurance needn’t be a hassle and could end up making all the difference during difficult times.”
