Older travellers reminded of insurance requirement

Older people have been reminded of the need to take out adequate travel insurance when jetting off on their holidays.

New research from Saga Travel Insurance has revealed ten per cent of over 50s headed abroad without cover at some point during the last five years, while 20 per cent of those under 50 regularly choose to holiday without protection in place.

According to the findings, cancellations account for 42 per cent of all travel claims made by people aged 50 and over, with falling ill prior to the day of departure being the number one reason for plans being disrupted.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Services, said it is important holidaymakers ensure they have adequate cover as soon as their getaway is booked, explaining failure to pack travel insurance can prove to be a costly mistake.

Mr Ramsden stated: “Paying thousands for a cancelled holiday or medical bills is sure to wipe the smile from the most genial of globetrotters’ faces.”

The research also showed the most expensive medical claims typically cost £2,195, while suffering from an ear infection or stomach bug is likely to result in a bill worth around £200.
