Holidaymakers leaving it late to buy travel insurance

Many holidaymakers leave it late before finally organising their travel insurance, new research has shown.

Carried out by MoneySupermarket.com, the study revealed 58 per cent of vacationers put off purchasing such cover and fail to protect themselves as soon as they book their getaway.

According to the investigation, 30 per cent of those questioned often wait until within a month of their departure date before making these arrangements.

Bob Atkinson, holiday insurance expert at the price comparison site - which was established as an offline business in 1993 before being launched on the net in 1999 - explained taking out travel insurance sooner rather than later offers greater peace of mind, with many policies affordable for most people.

The industry figure added: "Taking out travel insurance when you book your break won't cost a penny more, yet as long as you've ensured cancellation is included, you'll be protected from the moment you book."

He warned, however, people should beware that all eventualities may not be covered automatically, so it is important individuals take the time to research their options and choose a deal most suited to them.
