Van hire insurance will not cover possessions during a house move

MyLocalVanHire.co.uk is advising people who are planning to move house and save money by hiring a van and doing it themselves that the insurance van hire companies provide does not usually cover personal possessions while they are in the van, unless additional cover is purchased.

Many customers assume that their home contents insurance will cover their possessions during DIY removals because of the "temporarily removed from home" clause found in most home contents policies .

However, most home insurance policies have a separate clause for home removals which states that cover is only provided when the move is undertaken by a professional removals company and sometimes it is a requirement that both the old home and the new home are insured with the same insurance company .

The van hire website warns that choosing to save costs and carry out a DIY removal with a hire van could turn into a very expensive decision if any possessions get lost or damaged while in transit.
