Drivers intend to cut back on car insurance in 2011

Many drivers in the UK will be cutting back on their car insurance cover this year in a bid to save money, according to Your Cover .

Research conducted by the insurer found that one in ten motorists are seriously thinking about saving money by removing legal protection and courtesy car cover from their policies and also increasing their voluntary excess limits. However, many insurance policies automatically include these extras so customers don’t have the option of whether they want to pay for them or not.

Motorists are advised to shop around for cheaper car insurance and still keep the benefits of their previous cover.

Andy James, head of direct customer marketing at Your Cover, said: "We would advise motorists to think carefully about the kind of car insurance policy they want in terms of cover. For example, a policy may seem cheap, but there is a wide variation in the level of charges imposed by insurers for things like mid-term adjustments, cancellation fees and paying by direct debit. These can all make a policy much more expensive in the long-run."
