Drink-driving charge hikes car insurance premiums by 85 per cent

Motorists can expect to see their car insurance premiums rise by 85 per cent if they are convicted of drink-driving.

This is according to research carried out by moneysupermarket.com and it found the typical price of cover will go up from £424 per year to £784 if caught.

On top of this, some people may find it hard to get any insurer to take them on after prosecution.

Peter Harrison, insurance spokesperson at the comparison website, stated people will be out drinking and enjoying themselves more over the Christmas period.

"Ensuring you have adequate travel arrangements in place to get you home is essential as driving while under the influence should not be an option in any circumstances," he added.

Mr Harrison continued by saying drivers caught over the limit could face three penalty points, 12 months in prison and a fine of up to £1,000.

It comes after Gem unveiled guidance for motorists showing them how they can take extra caution during the winter months, such as carrying additional clothing and topping up anti-freeze levels.
