People thinking about adopting a pet should first consider whether they can afford to look after the animal, according to Marks and Spencer Pet Insurance .
Andrew Ferguson, head of general insurance at the firm, classed it as a "financial commitment" for an individual to bring a pet into their home . He said: "Potential pet owners need to give careful consideration to how any pet adoption might impact on their lifestyles and pockets before deciding on a new animal addition to the family."
His comments follow the publication of a series of tips from M&S Pet Insurance, advising people to consider issues such as the age, breed and lifestyle of a furry companion when pondering an adoption. Mr Ferguson emphasised that looking after a pet can be a very enjoyable experience, but people must contemplate the costs as well as the benefits.
Recently, the firm reminded dog owners that their pet can suffer health problems if it eats too much chocolate .
