Globetrotters who will be spending more than 30 days away from home have been urged to check the terms of their home insurance policy .
The comparison website, moneysupermarket.com, has said that not all cover policies offer protection in the event of a property being unoccupied for a whole month and it has advised that if anyone is going on a prolonged stay away from home, they should check if their insurance is suitable for their needs.
Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, commented: "Some cover providers are very strict about how long a property can be left unoccupied for. It is therefore vital you inform your insurer if you plan to be away for longer than the stated length of time." She added that failure to do this could invalidate an insurance policy and leave homeowners with considerable bills if a house is damaged or burgled.
Last summer, cover providers dealt with 78,000 domestic burglary claims, according to the Association of British Insurers .
