Recession-hit Brits admit they would consider making a false home insurance claim, with nearly 402,000 having confessed to having successfully faked a claim already, according to research carried out by moneysupermarket.com.
The comparison site found 2.4 million Brits, or six per cent, are willing to consider making a false claim on their home insurance, which compares to five per cent in August 2009 and shows that in just over seven months around 500,000 more people are thinking about submitting a dishonest claim.
Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "How worrying to see so many consumers believe it is acceptable to make a false or exaggerated claim on their home insurance. Fabricating a claim for a pay out is not only wholly inadvisable but it is also illegal and you could face being prosecuted as a result. Perhaps people feel their dishonesty only impacts the insurer but insurance fraud of this nature increases the cost of premiums for honest Brits."
