Around half of motorists don’t know if their car insurance covers them to drive in Europe, according to moneysupermarket.com.
Research conducted by the website revealed that while almost 50 per cent of motorists don’t know what their car insurance covers them for when driving in Europe, around 30 per cent believe that their fully comprehensive car insurance will give them the same level of cover in Europe as in the UK. Almost 20 per cent think they will be downgraded to third party cover while driving in Europe.
The level of car insurance cover a motorist has when driving in Europe is dependant on the insurance provider . Moneysupermarket found that out of the 20 main brand car insurance providers, half do provide the same level of cover in Europe as in the UK. However, the insurance cover will usually be provided for a stated number of days and drivers are being warned to check this as they could easily get caught out.
