Pet insurance policies essential during recession

Petplan is appealing to customers not to cut the amount they spend on insuring their pets in order to save money during the recession .

The pet insurance provider says that cancelling pet insurance policies, or reducing the amount of cover they have, could leave animal owners with greater problems. According to Alison Andrew, marketing manager from Petplan, some of the most common ailments that affect domestic animals like dogs are recurring problems such as glaucoma, which can cost around £1,000 a year to treat.

Ms Andrew said: "It's genuinely worrying to us when we hear people talking about cutting insurance as a money saving tip, because we understand the heartbreak people can suffer if they suddenly find they can't afford to treat their pet any more."

Petplan has been offering pet insurance since 1976. It has been part of the Allianz Global Group, which also includes Cornhill insurance, since 1996.
