Pet owners should not cut back on insurance, says M&S

Those who are thinking of cutting back on pet insurance during the economic downturn have been urged to think of the long term by Marks and Spencer (M&S) Money, which offers pet insurance .

Prevention is a better, and more economically beneficial, option than a cure and pet owners should invest in regular affordable treatments.

A treatment to reduce the risk of fleas in pets costs £4 whereas a veterinary bill can cost up to £2,000 to treat sick pets .

M&S Pet Insurance currently offers five per cent off prescription and non-prescription drugs as well as pet food from online pharmacy Bestpet.co.uk, which offers goods at prices 50 per cent of those from a vet.

John Darlington, of Bestpet Pharmacy, said: "Even if a pet is insured they need to be treated regularly to prevent suffering and avoid potential claims as well as possible premium increases."

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance recently published research which showed that the type of dog pet owners choose can also affect how much they pay for pet insurance, with Rottweilers being the most expensive.
