Travellers advised to shop around for insurance

Over the coming days major travel operators will release 2010 summer deals. In order to encourage families to book early, free child places are expected to be available.

As many families plan their 2010 getaway in the sun, Confused.com is warning consumers that it is not obligatory to purchase insurance with the tour operator . The comparison website says that for those with a budget, it is best to shop around for travel insurance .

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and Datamonitor, 40 per cent of all travel insurance policies were sold by travel agents last year. However, when purchasing insurance from the travel agent, holidaymakers could be paying almost 500 per cent more for insurance than is necessary.

While many consumers purchase holidays through travel agents, they don’t need to protect the holiday with the same provider. Even though holiday insurance is essential, holidaymakers do not have to pay over the odds for it, especially when shopping around for a better deal is likely to save money .
