Number of cars crashed for insurance money rises

There has been an increase in the number of people who are putting their own and other people's lives at risk by purposefully crashing their cars in order to claim the insurance money, says the Insurance Fraud Bureau .

Accidents that are induced, whereby motorists cause a crash with the intention of profiting from insurance claims are becoming an increasing problem for road users and policy holders in the UK, warns the Bureau.

John Beadle, chairman of the group, stated: "The criminal gangs targeting honest motorists are ruthless. Innocent lives are being put at risk and fraudulent insurance claims add approximately £40 to every premium paid by honest policy holders each year."

Incidents of this kind will see those preying on drivers brake suddenly when leaving a junction, with criminals sometimes disabling their lights so that the car in front does not know they are about to brake.
