Drivers who rip up their L plates could face a big rise in their car insurance, it has been revealed.
The South Wales Argus reports the case of Ryan Ford, 17, whose car insurance premium increased from £1,000 to £1,600 when he passed his test.
Mr Ford was told by his car insurance firm that taking the Pass Plus course would reduce the cost by £60.
He is now considering if he will be able to afford car insurance in future and may have to sell his vehicle.
Speaking to the newspaper, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers explained that young male drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents .
"As a group they make many more claims against car insurance and the value of those claims is greater," he said.
People looking to cut the cost of their car insurance should take steps such as fitting security devices, the representative added.
Recently, car insurance firm esure warned that satnav devices could increase incidents of carsickness.
