Van insurance customers urged to concentrate on roads

Van insured drivers who do not wish to jeopardise their cheap van insurance cover should avoid chatting on their mobile phones while driving.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) warned that taking a call while on the move can significantly increase the likelihood of a motorist being involved in a road accident . It also found that hands free kits did not eliminate any potential dangers.

According to the organisation, people who engage in a mobile phone conversation while behind the wheel, whether they use a handset or not, are four times more likely to be involved in a crash. Sending a text message on a mobile was highlighted as an even bigger risk, as motorists completely take their eyes off the road.

It was estimated that in 2007, at least 25 deaths occurred on British roads which involved drivers using mobile phones. A Rospa spokeswoman, Jo Stagg, said: "People are sadly being killed in phone-related crashes."
