Car insurance websites criticised by Which?

A number of price comparison websites have been criticised by Which? after an investigation found that many were not returning accurate information to customers.

Researchers from the consumer magazine found that some car insurance price comparison sites did not return quotes with the excess that they had specified. Which? also found that some websites altered the desired excess amount its researchers had entered in order to return a cheaper quote .

Jess Ross, editor of Which?, said: "Don't be fooled into thinking that online comparison sites are a one-stop shop. Customers need to search around different sites and keep their wits about them. The investigation also found that the way some sites display their excess charges means it's difficult for people to make informed decisions".

Recently, a BBC Panorama investigation criticised some price comparison websites for charging insurers commission for passing on business, which it claimed might bias the information they displayed to customers.
