Van drivers in the UK are being urged to check their insurance before getting behind the wheel of another vehicle .
Swinton, a high street van insurance retailer, is warning van drivers that they may not be covered by their insurance to drive a different car or vehicle. Under most motor policies, car drivers tend to be covered by third party insurance to drive other cars, however commercial policies do not generally provide van drivers with the same automatic cover.
Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton, said: "Van and commercial vehicle drivers often wrongly assume they are covered to drive another vehicle. A typical example could be a van driver who uses his vehicle for business and assumes their insurance policy covers them to drive a family member's car, which generally isn't the case."
Swinton recommends that van drivers and drivers of commercial vehicles check their policy to find out what they are covered to drive.
