Homeowners could end up paying a fortune this winter if they have not taken out adequate home insurance, according to Axa .
Last year, more people claimed on their Axa home insurance in December and January for escape of water than for either fire or theft. Around 35 per cent of consumers worry that their home will be broken into while they are out during the Christmas holiday, however only eight per cent are concerned about the damage that burst pipes could cause.
Nick Kidd, head of home insurance at Axa, said: "Not only does burst pipe damage have financial implications, especially if insurance is not in place, but it can also cause huge emotional trauma from ruined personal belongings."
Earlier in the year, the insurance provider advised those who are going away this Christmas to ensure they have the right travel insurance cover, whether they are staying in the UK or going further afield for their break.
