Virgin Money Car Insurance has said that the last Saturday before Christmas Day is the worst day for car claims .
Most insurance claims are put in for December 19th, with 40 per cent more than the monthly average. Claims increase for both accidents and thefts from cars and this is thought to be due to shoppers rushing with cars loaded up with last-minute purchases.
Claims are slightly below average on Christmas Eve, with New Years Eve being just above the month's average number of claims. Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money commented: "With more drivers on the road and cars potentially chock-full with presents, it can be a dangerous time for claims."
According to research by the company, October 20th is the worst day of the year for car accidents, with an average of 10.4 per cent of all car claims occurring over the course of the month. The majority of accidents happen in the last three months of the year and account for 30 per cent of annual claims.
