The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has advised travellers on how to provide evidence for swine flu claims made on their travel insurance policies .
In addition to the swine flu travel insurance update from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently, BIBA has confirmed that its broker members will accept the unique ID number given by the National Flu Service and the label on the anti-flu drugs (such as Tamiflu) showing name and date of issue details, as proof of swine flu diagnosis. This will be adequate in the absence of written confirmation from a GP or other medical practitioner.
However, there are travel insurance policies which have a ‘pandemic’ exclusion so travellers will need to check their cover carefully.
Even if a travel insurance policy includes cover for swine flu, most policies don’t generally include cover if a person is well enough to travel but simply decides not to, even if the reason is concern over swine flu.
