Contents insurer finds burglars attracted by electronic goods

Electronic objects that can be seen in house windows could attract burglars, according to recent research by Norwich Union .

The study, conducted by the household contents insurance provider, found that games, consoles and DVDs make up around two-thirds of the items stolen in domestic break-ins in the UK. Statistics from the firm also showed that electronic goods such as computers, cameras and mobile phones are popular targets for thieves.

Simon Warsop, director of home pricing at Norwich Union, said: "Making sure that windows and doors are properly locked, sheds are secured and that properties are kept in good order can all deter the opportunist burglars who are looking to make a profit from your home ."

Recently, the home secretary Jacqui Smith announced that some people in the UK will receive vouchers from the government which are to be used to upgrade their locks and home security measures.
