Parents urged to check home insurance policy

Parents may find that two in three insurance companies will not cover the cost of damage caused by parties that get out of hand, new research has revealed.

Every year, Britain’s' youths cause major structural damage to homes, worth £16.8 million, while hosting parties without their parents’ consent. According to Fairinvestment.co.uk, insurance policies may not cover such damages if they are caused by someone who is not a member of the household.

A recent study by Sainsbury's Home Insurance, has revealed that nearly 54,000 parties are held without the parents' consent every year. Manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, Neil Laird said: "The rise of sites such as Facebook and Bebo has dramatically changed the way teenagers in particular invite 'friends' to their parties ."

Last year, 200 teenagers caused £20,000 worth of damage to a home after a party in County Durham was advertised on the social networking site, MySpace . Mr Laird urges parents to warn their children about hosting parties in their homes and especially about inviting people they don’t know well.
