Newspaper offers car insurance beginner's guide

Wed, 24 Sep 2008

The Independent newspaper has published a "beginner's guide" to car insurance .

Readers can get advice on how to shop for cover, what sort of policy to buy and how to cut costs. The newspaper described comparison websites as a "great tool" for finding a good deal, however drivers were also told to shop around as there isn’t one site that is completely exhaustive.

Also, the paper points out that while there are benefits of fully comprehensive insurance, it says that the extra charges may not be worthwhile if the car is old. In those cases, the minimum legal requirement of third party could be a better option, although newer and more expensive cars should be comprehensively insured .

The guide also suggests that drivers under 25 should consider pay-as-you-go insurance schemes which can help lower premiums by assessing driving habits, or to pay annually rather than monthly.
