The rise of the Saga lout

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is warning older travellers to keep an eye on their alcohol consumption and ensure that they are adequately insured when travelling overseas .

There has been serious criticism of the over-55 holidaymakers, dubbed the ‘ Saga louts’, who are refusing to put their feet up and are looking for new holiday experiences.

According to recent data from the FCO, almost 25 per cent of over-55 travellers attempt activities on holiday that they would not try at home .

The FCO advises people to visit their GP at least six weeks before they travel and to check their travel insurance policies to ensure that they will be covered for any planned activities.

A ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign, run by the FCO, advises people to familiarise themselves with local customs and not to go swimming on a full stomach or after drinking.
