According to insurer LV=, UK homeowners have over £23 billion worth of sporting equipment in their homes - most of which is untouched. When starting a new activity, around 23 per cent buy all the equipment they require, only to find themselves abandoning their chosen pursuit.
LV= spokesperson Emma Holyer advises people to remember their sporting equipment, even the untouched gear, when working out home insurance cover, to make sure they are not underinsured.
"It's easy to forget how much it would cost to replace the sporting equipment you have, unless you consider each item carefully and add up the total cost," she said.
Jewellery and electronics are often considered the most expensive items to replace, but sporting equipment can cost thousands of pounds. Ms Holyer added that as thieves find electronics harder to sell on, sporting equipment is being targeted.
Homeowners should not overlook personal possessions cover . This covers items like mobile phones, money, laptops and bags and also sports equipment when it is not in the home .
