According to new research from Saga Home Insurance, DIY can be a dangerous hobby . Figures show that one in four people injure themselves while carrying out home improvements .
This could explain why this typically British hobby is not as popular as it used to be. Over half of all homeowners are choosing to hire external third party contractors, or ask partners or family members to undertake their household jobs.
A third of homeowners asked their partners for help which coincides with research carried out by Halifax which found that 29 per cent of men dont enjoy doing DIY, but feel under pressure to do it by their wives and girlfriends.
About one in five people called in professional tradesman, while one in 20 DIY enthusiasts had to get outside help in to repair damage they themselves had done.
Before attempting any household renovations, Saga is advising people to check that they have full accidental damage cover added to their buildings and contents insurance .
