British kitchens full of unused gadgets says home insurer

Homes across the UK contain in the region of £500 worth of unused domestic appliances, claims a new survey.

The research by Halifax Home Insurance revealed that kitchen gadgets are the ones abandoned the most, with around £2.6 billion stored away in cupboards around the country, with toastie makers and blenders the ones most likely to be forgotten.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, says: "British kitchens are turning into a graveyard of unused gadgets ." He adds they have become "merely decorative items for millions of wannabe chefs ."

The research raised other concerns in British kitchens including estimates that £64 million damage is caused by cooks each year with their appliances, usually because they have failed to read the instructions in detail. According to esure home insurance, one in ten British people have confessed to having a cooking accident or to damaging their kitchen because they have tried to copy professional techniques shown on the television .
