Caravan owners must ensure that they have adequate insurance in place as their car insurance may not cover all eventualities, one industry body has warned.
A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers said that when a caravan was being towed then any liability would be covered by a person's car insurance but a separate policy would be needed to cover the actual caravan itself.
She added that people should check to see what was covered by any caravan policy they had in place and, if necessary, take out extra cover if they were taking expensive items on holiday with them.
When a caravan is parked outside someone's house its contents would be covered by their home insurance policy.
A survey undertaken by the British Holiday and Home Parks Association found that half of all people living in the UK had been on a caravanning holiday at some point in their life.
