Pet insurance can offer owners peace of mind, one expert believes.
Jenny Davies of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), said: "It is important for pet owners to consider getting their pet insured. Insurance provides cover for unexpected veterinary fees and peace of mind."
She added that anyone taking out a pet insurance policy will find that they are also covered for any damage their pet might do to a person or property .
Ms Davies added that obesity is now a problem in cats and dogs, explaining that overweight pets could suffer similar conditions to overweight humans.
Diabetes, liver problems and heart disease are all seen in overweight pets, she explained.
This, combined with the fact that some breeds of pet are more susceptible to such conditions anyway could mean people end up paying out large amounts of money to cover vets bills if they do not have pet insurance.
According to recent research by the PDSA, one in three dogs and one in four cats are overweight.
