Homeowners have been warned by Halifax Home Insurance to winter-proof their homes in preparation for the cold weather .
According to the insurer 20,000 people required broken or frozen pipes to be fixed last winter, with each repair costing on average £2,000. Data from Halifax Home Insurance's data revealed that there were around 30,000 claims for storm damage last year which cost a total of £17 million to put right.
Homeowners were urged to check the condition of their roofs, repair them if necessary and clear gutters and drain pipes, to minimise the strain put on them by the winter weather. David Rochester from Halifax Home Insurance said: "With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than the cure, and much of the damage could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the bad weather."
Recently, Confused.com warned drivers to check the condition of their cars before driving in cold weather.
