The British public are facing debt and increased insurance premiums by trying to tackle complex building work themselves, according to a new survey.
Figures from Confused.com revealed that almost six million people have had self-inflicted DIY disasters while carrying out work on their property . One in ten people said that the damage was so severe they had to make a claim on their home insurance to cover it and that this could result in higher premiums in the future.
The survey also found that while men caused more damage while carrying out building work, accidents by women were more costly. A male DIY blunder cost on average £556.36, while for females the cost was £758.58.
"The summer often brings out the DIY enthusiast in all of us, but it is important to remember to take safety precautions when undertaking home improvement jobs, however small they may seem," commented Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com.
