The coming months will see many homeowners planting trees in their garden, but they need to take care that they dont put their property in danger of subsiding warns a leading insurance provider.
Sainsbury's Home Insurance say that 9.7 million people are planning on planting a new tree in their garden in the coming year. However, homeowners are advised to do their research and make sure the tree is suitable before planting. The insurer explained that planting the wrong tree can increase the risk of subsidence and result in people making a claim on their home insurance .
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, explained: "Planting trees is not only a commendable act in today's environmental climate; a well thought out garden can also add significant value to your property. However, people should be very careful about which type of tree they plant and how far away from the property they plant it."
The company said that 12 per cent of all the money it paid out for subsidence is for claims caused by trees or other vegetation .
