No car insurance complications for many speeders

Many people are getting away with speeding, the legal consequences and likely implications to their car insurance policies, it has been suggested.

Data reported in the Press and Journal showed that almost 1,000 speeders have escaped scot-free in the north-east of Scotland because they are driving cars registered outside of the UK.

In the Grampian region, 976 overseas drivers were clocked on speed cameras but avoided any action. Speeding is usually dealt with by a fine and points on a driving licence - something also likely to cause higher car insurance premiums.

MSP Christine Grahame has urged Swansea's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in to contact other organisations around Europe in a bid to clamp down on these people flouting the law.

"There has already been some concerns expressed by motoring organisations and by my constituents about the roadworthiness of some foreign registered vehicles on Scottish roads," the paper reports her as saying.

Earlier this month the Daily Telegraph reported that the 100 most active speed cameras in the UK have created over one million penalty points.
