Motorists risking car insurance hikes

New research has revealed that the number of motorists caught jumping traffic lights has increased during 2007.

According to Confused.com, the first nine months of 2007 have seen an 11 per cent increase in the percentage of drivers caught going through red lights, compared with the same period in 2006.

The firm noted that such offences - which often see drivers given three penalty points on their license - can increase the cost of car insurance premiums by as much as ten per cent.

Debra Williams, managing director of the firm, said: "Many insurers see a distinct link between drivers jumping lights and the increased likelihood of claims and accidents."

In related news, Sainsburys Bank recently estimated that the cost of running a car has increased by approximately 2.6 per cent on the previous year.

The firm reported that motoring currently costs an average of £2,259 a year, compared with £2,205 in 2006.
